Farmers Markets and CSA's
Hawai'i Island Directory
There are approximately 25 farmers markets on Hawai'i Island. The number of vendors at each of these markets ranges from 5 to 200. Some serve neighborhoods, others serve whole districts—each is unique. The variety of fresh produce and food products is dazzling. Many food crops and products are grown conventionally, but more vendors are offering certified organic produce and products grown without petroleum-based chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Many markets have plants and flowers. Some markets add arts, crafts, clothing and miscellaneous household items, new and used. One could say that farmers markets are the heart of our island’s local, sustainable food system.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.
- Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
- Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
- Usually have an opportunity to visit the farm at least once a season
- Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows your food and learn more about how food is grown
- Can spend time marketing when the demands of farming are low (off-peak season)
- Build a reliable, steady customer base
- Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow
- Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow
