Hawai'i Island Directory

Mahalo nui to Sonia R. Martinez for her initiative and hard work in updating and expanding this list for the Hawai'i Homegrown Food Network. The original market names were compiled from many different sources in early 2010: Slow Food Hawai'i, Our Hamakua Newsletter, Edible Hawaiian Islands Magazine, Kona Web, Ben Discoe, and from many individuals, vendors and market managers. This directory has been revised and expanded continually since early 2010. Please contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Bring surplus produce from your farm or garden to exchange with other community members in attendance. No one will be turned away. If you don’t have produce to share you can just lend a hand to participate. Swap coordinators will facilitate exchanges by displaying and storing produce, helping participants determine fair exchange conditions, and collecting excess food at the end of the day for delivery to The Food Basket and other food distribution centers. Based on a traditional system of sharing among neighbors and ‘ohana, the Crop Share will provide a gathering place for farmers, home gardeners, and local residents to exchange their surplus produce with one another. The Crop Share will  include workshops on various topics related to food production, such as seed saving or composting techniques, to encourage and enable families to grow more of their own food and incorporate healthy food choices into their diets. Introduction to Hawai'i Island farmers Markets

On Hawai’i Island there are approximately 30 local farmers markets. The number of vendors at each of these markets ranges from 5 to 200. Some serve neighborhoods, others serve whole districts. And each is unique. The variety of fresh produce and food products is dazzling. Most food crops and products are grown conventionally, but more vendors are offering certified organic produce and products grown without petroleum-based chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Many markets have plants and flowers. Some markets add arts, crafts, clothing and miscellaneous household items, new and used. Farmers markets are the heart of our island’s local, sustainable food system, and are the wave of the future for a new food paradigm.

What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

Consumer benefits:

  • Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
  • Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
  • Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season
  • Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows your food and learn more about how food is grown

Farmer benefits:

  • Can spend time marketing when the demands of farming are low (off-peak season)
  • Build a reliable, steady customer base
  • Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow
  • Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow
