Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu is a project to revitalize 'ulu (breadfruit) as an attractive, delicious, nutritious, abundant, affordable, and culturally appropriate food which addresses Hawai'i's food security issues. It is well known that Hawai'i imports about 90% of its food, making it one of the most food insecure states in the nation. Additionally, since the economic downturn of 2008, many families lack access to affordable and nutritious food. We believe that breadfruit is a key to solving Hawaii's food security problems.

The Hawi Farmers Market: Ready & Refreshed

The new Hawi Farmers Market is bringing back their known & lively market. In its new location at the entrance of Kohala Village HUB just right across the street from their previous home. Hawi Farmers Market partners are working to bring back the atmosphere of community, collaboration & unity that North Kohala prides itself on.

Helping to increase access and expanding direct producer to consumer market opportunities in North Kohala is a meaningful objective for the Hawi Farmers Market. The Hawi Farmers Market serves a rural district that has a prosperous agricultural history & this is explicitly shown through the vendors in attendance weekly. As you walk through the options put forth, you can truly appreciate the diverse experience the market has to offer. There are a wide array of offerings such as; kalo, coconuts, pumpkin, tomato, bananas, herbs, citrus, eggs, honey, hummus, bread, candles, lemonade, baked goods & many more.
